Metal business cards are neat. But when a photographer friend of mine asked me to design him some, I was determined to make them do more than look neat. So I made them do something special.
Designing for metal provides many unique challenges, and opportunities. While I had many ideas for how the metal might be shaped into 3 dimensions, I was determined that the initial state (in 2 dimensions) be as visually pleasing as possible.
A hand is already such an iconic shape, but by bending the semi-articulated fingers one can say more than a static, 2-dimensional shape ever could. Even some very rude things!
One of the opportunities metal provided (and that a hand shape even called for) was the ability to make the metal card interact with other objects (in this case an envelope, or perhaps an invoice).
A special holiday edition was created at the same time to promote a gallery show that took place in December.
By taking a lesson from kindergarten papercraft, this card can be popped-up to form a very stylized Christmas tree.
